Current Sea Pioneer SCEFL Premier Division Standings:
In recent weeks the race for promotion has heated up ten-fold with some results having big implications on the way things stand. We spent a long time at the summit but as we know all too well, it doesn’t matter who’s on top until its official at the end of the season.
There are five teams in contention for promotion: Us, Chatham Town, Corinthian, Sheppey United and Tunbridge Wells. We are currently top of the league and have the best win percentage having won two-thirds of our games so far. Interestingly Tunbridge has the second-highest despite sitting in fifth place suggesting they could make a late charge for the top spot with the aid of their games in hand and other results going their way. However, Tunbridge also has the most losses out of the top five and have only one draw this season. Their 5-1 defeat at Chatham could be the nail in the coffin.
The team best placed to overtake us in this race are Corinthian in third. They have a game in hand over us which if won would see them top by a point. As it stands, they will win the league if they manage not to drop any points in the remaining games. This is highly unlikely given the league that we are in and their continued involvement in the FA Vase.
Sheppey are the top scorers in the league amassing an average of just over three goals per game and a goal difference of 43, ten more than anyone else in the league. They’ve shown that they can score goals against anyone from the bottom teams all the way to their fellow contenders. If this race goes down to goal difference then there is seemingly only one winner.
One final twist in this tale is that the top three sides must all face each other in three games within the space of 18 days that could all be potential title deciders and by the end of them, we should have a clearer promotion picture.
